Therapy can be a source of tremendous relief and gratification. Unhappiness and anxiety that seem unbearable can lessen and disappear when you have someone who can help you understand the reasons for your suffering. A good therapist can also help you strengthen your capacity to get your mind off upsetting thoughts that preoccupy you. Or if you find yourself acting in self-defeating ways, studying it with a therapist can be of great help.
I am a psychologist in practice for over 30 years and I have offices in both San Francisco and Marin County. I am also trained as a psychoanalyst through the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. About half of my practice is with adults and couples and the other half is with adolescents and children. If you would like to know more about my background please click here. Problems experienced by people I see include:
• Anxiety and its manifestations such as
. phobias
. panic attacks
. sleep disturbance
. somatic symptoms (chronic headaches, stomach aches etc.)
• grief reactions
• difficulty enjoying life
• intense self-criticism and feelings of inadequacy
• self-defeating behaviors
• Inhibitions in work or relationships
• eating disorders
• substance abuse
• attentional problems
• behavior problems
• school difficulties
Since therapist styles and ways of formulating problems vary, I think the best way to decide whether someone can help you is to see how you feel at the end of one or more sessions and to trust your instincts about whether or not you feel a particular therapist can be helpful to you. Ideally, you would leave an initial consultation with a new way of thinking about the problem that brought you in.
If you would like to schedule an initial appointment, please leave your name and phone number(s) with my voicemail and I will return your call as soon as I can. Thank you very much.
